Ika Hügel-Marshall

Ika Hügel-Marshall

A special celebration of life in our oral history series: Ika Hügel-Marshall (March 13, 1947- April 21, 2022), a humble giant  in the Afro-German movement since the 1980s.

In collaboration with Dr. Dagmar Schultz, Ika’s life partner, JB and I created videos about Ika’s life. Ika was an activist, co-author of several books, author of Daheim unterwegs: Ein deutsches Leben (Invisible Woman: Growing Up Black in Germany), artist, social counselor, anti-racism consultant, martial artist, and friend…

We have known Dagmar and Ika since the 1990s. These videos came initially from our love and friendship for both of them. They grew, with the help of Dagmar, into the tribute you will see now.

The first video is in German and was shown in Berlin on May 28th at the 50 Jahre Lesbenbewegung event, organized by Mahide Lein. It is followed by Dagmar’s farewell speech at Ika’s celebration of life on June 21st.  Finally we screened the English version of the first video for non-German speakers.

If you would like to view our archive video of the presentation, contact Dr. Marion Gerlind for access.
